Job openings for bilinguals continue to rise while job seekers stall

The October 2017 global job-opening-to-application ratio is 1.55


 Daijob Global Recruiting Co. Ltd (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Yuji Shinohara), a subsidiary of Human Holdings Co. Ltd, which operates the bilingual job search site Daijob.com, summarized the global job-opening-to-application ratio as of the end of October 2017.
※The global job-opening-to-application ratio expresses the supply-demand balance for job openings for bilingual job seekers (with at least two languages) with business level skills (job-opening-to-application ration= = job openings ÷ job seekers)

 The October 2017 global job-opening-to-application ratio is up 0.22 points from the previous month to 1.55. Off of a strong performance in the corporate sector, job offers have increased by 3.8% from that of the previous month, keeping job demand robust. However, the wave of applicants proactively searching for work has slowed down due to positive corporate performances improving current job situations and creating a cautious attitude toward career change.

Global Job Openings to Job-Seekers Ratio by Industry

 Looking at the global job-opening-to-application ratio by industry, the top three industries for October are Electric Utilities, Gas, Heating, Water Supply; Manufacturing; and Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, Mining. Among the twelve industries, the job-opening-to-application ratio rose in eight: Manufacturing; Wholesale, Retail; Finance, Insurance; Construction, Real Estate, Goods Rental and Leasing; Electric Utilities, Gas, Heating, Water Supply; Transportation and Postal; Academic Research, Professional and Technical Services, Education, Learning Support; and Service.  Additionally, the number of job openings rose in eight industries compared to the previous month, dropping in the following four: Wholesale, Retail; Accommodation and Food Services; Telecommunications; and Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, Mining. In Manufacturing in particular, the increase was 6.9% from that of the previous month, with active recruitment happening among automobile and transportation equipment manufacturers as well as manufacturers of pharmaceuticals.

Global Job-Opening-to-Application Ratio by Job Category

 Looking at the global job-opening-to-application ratio for October by job category, the top-three job categories are Medical/Pharmaceutical/Bio/Material/Food; Electronics (Appliance/Semiconductor); and Finance/Accounting. In terms of the number of job openings, Medical/Pharmaceutical/Bio/Material/Food hit its highest since July of this year, while IT Technology, Marketing/PR, and Sales continue to remain steady.
